A Lesson in Upsells.. From My Local Sandwich Cart!
OK, so this one at first glance looks awesome, and then a little bit of thought exposes it to be a brilliant lesson in bolt-on sales and should be heeded by everyone at the simplicity of it!
A sandwich guy comes to our building every workday.
He has a new thing that he pitches all his customers:
He is selling tickets.
each costs £1 each.
he is selling 200 in total.
winner drawn gets free food every day for a month (max value per day £3, weekdays only).
there is a second and third prize (negligible, cheap).
so the sneaky bit is:
a month of free grub sounds great, but it’s only mon-fri which is 5 days x 4 weeks = 20 days at £3 = £60 first prize value. so forgetting the second and third prizes, he’s looking at £140 profit for selling tickets to his existing customers!
and don’t forget that a £3 sandwich costs him a **LOT** less than that to make!!
I’m VERY impressed with this, especially since I felt the initial “that sounds good” feeling when I heard the offer, and I’ve seen the reaction with our staff. a one in 200 odds is quite attractive, and then they think of buying MORE tickets…buying ten make it a 1 in 20 odds… hmmm…VERY attractive!
